Summary

Soldier。 Summoner。 Saint。 Orphaned and expendable, Alina Starkov is a soldier who knows she may not survive her first trek across the Shadow Fold - a swath of unnatural darkness crawling with monsters。 But when her regiment is attacked, Alina unleashes dormant magic not even she knew she possessed。

Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country's magical military elite - and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling。 He believes Alina can summon a force capable of destroying the Shadow Fold and reuniting their war-ravaged country, but only if she can master her untamed gift。

As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation。

I liked this book, it was a quick read that kept me interested to find out what would happen next。 This might have been a 4 star read however the main character was a bit juvenile and annoying with her back and forth feelings。

Had a difficult time getting into this one but it picked up nicely about 1/3 of the way in。 I'm glad I stuck with it! Had a difficult time getting into this one but it picked up nicely about 1/3 of the way in。 I'm glad I stuck with it! 。。。more

I meannnnn。。。。。。 ok so I obviously started this series because I heard about it via Booktok/Netflix series is premiering this year。 But my god does Bardugo have a way with world building。 I always have this issue with fantasy novels where I either get amazing world building/magic system but mediocre characters or vice versa。 Is it too much to ask for both??? I was confused about the magic system at first but the more you read, the more you understand。 I enjoyed Alina’s character, although I can see why people are bored by her。 I think I liked her character best in scenes involving the Darkling now that I think about it。 And the Darkling! I know he is a straight up psychopath but my god I really started to sympathize with him。 Mal is meh。 Hope his character gets better but I am doubtful。 I really enjoyed the secondary characters like Zoya, Genya, and the Baghra。 。。。more

I think this really will make a fun Netflix show, so I am excited to see the adaptation and read the rest of the series。 。。。more

I really like this one。 It’s been a while since I’ve read YA and this one gave me serious Divergent/Hunger Games feels mixed with some of Elle Fanning in The Great。 Loved the twists and turns and can’t wait to read the next one in the series!

This was an easy read, but it had a few common YA tropes that I find boring at best。 I didn't like the way the main character didn't really need any training at all。 I would have expected her to struggle much more to catch up to people who have been training for most of their lives。 But no, she's so special that once she resolves her block, she's just as good if not better than them all。 Boring。The romance read like a 90s teen movie。 Oh he likes you now that you're pretty? That's nice。Despite th This was an easy read, but it had a few common YA tropes that I find boring at best。 I didn't like the way the main character didn't really need any training at all。 I would have expected her to struggle much more to catch up to people who have been training for most of their lives。 But no, she's so special that once she resolves her block, she's just as good if not better than them all。 Boring。The romance read like a 90s teen movie。 Oh he likes you now that you're pretty?

a beautiful and complex wordlbuilding that once you get into, is hard to get out。 i'm actually amazed by the complexity yet simplicity of the plot, such a normal YA Fantasy but that stands out through its lore and unique world。i must say i was apprehensive about this - i tried SoC and i really couldn't get into it, so i wasn't sure if leigh bardugo was for me。 to be honest i decided to try it because i was going through a tier rank of book boyfriends and it included the Darkling。 Yes。 The Darkli a beautiful and complex wordlbuilding that once you get into, is hard to get out。 i'm actually amazed by the complexity yet simplicity of the plot, such a normal YA Fantasy but that stands out through its lore and unique world。i must say i was apprehensive about this - i tried SoC and i really couldn't get into it, so i wasn't sure if leigh bardugo was for me。 to be honest i decided to try it because i was going through a tier rank of book boyfriends and it included the Darkling。 Yes。 The Darkling。either i was absolutely DECEIVED or there's more to this story that i do not know。 i absolutely love the Darkling AS A CHARACTER but i wouldn't characterize him as a book boyfriend for。。。 obvious reasons。regardless, i really found myself immersed in this book, i flinched in some parts and my heart raced in others, so i think it achieved its main goal。 some parts felt rushed like the fake romance, but i think it's because Bardugo's focus was more on other parts of the plot。 。。。more

Lol, he's supposed to be the villain and all, but he is a very interesting character。 I like Mal too, but I can see how he'll become a problem in the next book。 He won't understand her power and that'll make it difficult for him to understand her。 Excited to keep reading!! Unique world building, a fresh magical system, and a character that must face her own challenging inner struggle。 Shadow and Bone introduces us to the Grishaverse with a flare! I loved the characters, especially Alina, for being atypical compared to many MC heroines。 She’s relatable and her struggles felt real。 The most shocking aspect of Shadow and Bone was the Darkling。 His character always kept me guessing。 I don’t want to say too much to avoid spoilers。 But let’s just say my opinion of him went from one extreme to the other throughout the story。 Like I was in a constant tailspin, unsure what to think。 While S&B is definitely a YA, unlike most YA books, the plot was NOT predictable。 I certainly didn’t expect it to go the direction it went。 I had one idea in mind and by the 60% mark it was totally derailed。 But in a good way! And like most YA books, it reads quickly, has an obvious character arc, and follows a pretty typical Hero’s Journey, making it a comfortable read。Regarding the world building, for a first in a series, S&B eases you into the Grishaverse。 I am rather biased in my opinion because I read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom BEFORE this one。 So I was already well-familiar with the Grisha hierarchy, the magic, and even the map/world。 In fact, there were a couple characters briefly mentioned in SoC/CK that we see in Shadow and Bone: Genya。 I was incredibly intrigued by Genya’s character in Shadow and Bone。 I think she’s got a huge backstory that I’m DYING to know。 And with her being shown briefly in CK, I know she’s obviously going to play a more prevalent role in the next few books。 Many people told me that I would like SoC/CK better than S&B。 In some ways that was true, in other ways, that was false。 SoC/CK are very dense and very detailed books。 The world building is layer upon layer upon layer。 It was a slower read。 And I didn’t find myself dying to pick it up。 NOT SO for S&B。 It was simple, relaxing, and I craved it whenever I put it down, always eager to pick it up as soon as possible。 But where S&B felt VERY young adult, SoC/CK felt more like adult fantasy。 So I feel like I can’t judge them on the same scale。Do I recommend this? Absolutely! And even more so with the Netflix show coming soon。 𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝟰/𝟱⭐️ 。。。more

Hm okay not much happens in this book and considering all the hype surrounding this series, I’m a bit disappointed? For the first book in a trilogy, the world of the Grisha wasn’t fleshed out enough in my opinion。 There’s not much world building, which was disappointing。 I expected more introductions to the magic system and the Grisha world itself as it is the first book in the whole Grishaverse。 I think I would have been a bit lost if I hadn’t read Six Of Crows prior to this book and therefore, Hm okay not much happens in this book and considering all the hype surrounding this series, I’m a bit disappointed? Actually now that I look back, I didn’t really feel any chemistry between any character and Alina。。。 Idk, the whole story focused too much on Alina dilly-dallying and spending her days as a new-found Grisha and not much else。 It was nothing exciting really。 The last 80% was the only time I was like “oh we’re finally getting somewhere”。 Overall, the story lacked depth and excitement in some parts, but Leigh Bardugo’s writing managed to somehow keep me reading。 The plot itself is also still intriguing to me and I’m curious to see what will happen next, so I’ll definitely be continuing the series! 。。。more

I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did going into it but it was a great read。 I love the world that the author created and was instantly captivated by the story。 A lot of the characters, even the side ones, were really interesting。 I can’t wait to read the next。
